Monumento a Churruca
Situado junto a la ría, al final del muelle de Las Arenas, el Monumento a Evaristo de Churruca es uno de los conjuntos escultóricos más representativos de Getxo. Su ubicación, rodeada de jardines y muy próxima al Puente Bizkaia, ofrece excelentes vistas de Portugalete, la desembocadura de la ría y el Abra.

El monumento está dedicado al ingeniero Evaristo de Churruca, figura fundamental en la modernización del Puerto de Bilbao. Como responsable de la Junta de Obras del Puerto, impulsó importantes actuaciones para controlar las corrientes, eliminar la peligrosa barra de arena situada en la desembocadura y facilitar la entrada de barcos de mayor tamaño. Sus proyectos contribuyeron decisivamente al crecimiento portuario, comercial e industrial de Bilbao y Bizkaia.

Inaugurado oficialmente el 25 de octubre de 1939, el conjunto está formado por una gran torre-faro de estilo art déco, diseñada por el arquitecto Ignacio María Smith, y varias esculturas de bronce realizadas por Miguel García de Salazar. En la torre aparece Churruca sentado, mientras que a ambos lados se encuentran las figuras alegóricas de la Industria y la Navegación.

La parte más llamativa representa a Bilbao luchando contra Neptuno, símbolo de la fuerza del mar, con un gran bloque de escollera entre ambos. La escena simboliza el triunfo del trabajo y la ingeniería sobre las aguas de la ría.
Located beside the estuary, at the end of Las Arenas pier, the Monument to Evaristo de Churruca is one of Getxo’s most representative sculptural landmarks. Surrounded by gardens and situated very close to the Bizkaia Bridge, it offers excellent views of Portugalete, the mouth of the estuary and the Bay of Abra.

The monument is dedicated to engineer Evaristo de Churruca, a key figure in the modernisation of the Port of Bilbao. As head of the Port Works Board, he promoted major engineering projects to control the currents, remove the dangerous sandbar at the mouth of the estuary and allow larger ships to enter safely. His work played a decisive role in the port, commercial and industrial growth of Bilbao and Bizkaia.

Officially inaugurated on 25 October 1939, the monument consists of a large Art Deco-style tower resembling a lighthouse, designed by architect Ignacio María Smith, together with several bronze sculptures created by Miguel García de Salazar. Churruca is depicted seated on the tower, while allegorical figures representing Industry and Navigation stand on either side.

The most striking sculptural group represents Bilbao struggling against Neptune, symbolising the power of the sea, with a large block of stone between them. The scene represents the triumph of human effort and engineering over the waters of the estuary.
