Basílica de Begoña
La Basílica de Begoña es uno de los símbolos más importantes de Bilbao y un lugar de gran valor espiritual para los bilbaínos. Situada en lo alto de una colina que domina la ciudad, está dedicada a la Amatxu de Begoña, patrona de Bizkaia, cuya imagen se venera en su interior.
El templo fue construido entre los siglos XVI y XVII sobre una antigua ermita, y combina estilos gótico tardío y renacentista, con elementos añadidos en siglos posteriores. Su torre neobarroca, visible desde numerosos puntos de la ciudad, se añadió en el siglo XIX y se ha convertido en una referencia inconfundible del horizonte bilbaíno.
El interior destaca por su sobriedad y luminosidad, con una nave central amplia y una bella imagen de la Virgen en el altar mayor. Cada 15 de agosto, durante la festividad de la Virgen, miles de personas acuden en peregrinación al templo, creando una de las celebraciones más tradicionales de Bilbao.
La basílica puede visitarse a pie subiendo las Calzadas de Mallona, un recorrido histórico que parte desde el Casco Viejo y ofrece una de las mejores vistas de la ciudad.
The Basilica of Begoña is one of Bilbao’s most important landmarks and a place of deep spiritual significance for its people. Perched atop a hill overlooking the city, it is dedicated to the “Amatxu de Begoña”, the patron saint of Bizkaia, whose image is venerated inside the church.
The temple was built between the 16th and 17th centuries on the site of an old chapel, combining late Gothic and Renaissance styles, with elements added in later periods. Its Neo-Baroque tower, visible from many parts of the city, was added in the 19th century and has since become one of the most recognizable features of Bilbao’s skyline.
Inside, the basilica stands out for its simplicity and light-filled atmosphere, featuring a wide central nave and a beautiful statue of the Virgin on the main altar. Every August 15th, during the Feast of the Virgin of Begoña, thousands of people make a pilgrimage to the temple, creating one of Bilbao’s most cherished and traditional celebrations.
The basilica can be reached on foot via the Calzadas de Mallona, a historic stairway that starts in the Old Town and offers some of the best panoramic views of the city along the way.
